Great Music From a Great Band (RIP Dolores)
Stars: The Best of The Cranberries 1992 -2002 was a purchase I made in the wake of the tremendous loss earlier this year of the Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan at just 46; putting tragedy aside, getting it was a very worthy decision. With 20 tracks from this terrific alternative rock band, it’s an amazing deal. I came in liking their music, but ashamedly only five of the songs did I remember well, with a handful of others seeming familiar. I am grateful to say I really loved this collection, the band’s beats and Dolores’s voice coming together now soothingly, now jarringly, now with emotional intensity.
With exception to one track, number 6 “Ridiculous Thoughts” (the chorus of it just didn’t work for me) all these are taking a permanent and proud place in my iTunes library. My favorites of course include known songs like “Dreams” and my favorite of all “Zombie”, but also ones I had only heard a few times or perhaps never, like “Hollywood” and “Ode to My Family”. It includes two previously unreleased tracks (at-the-time of release in 2002), the one called “New New York” I rank among my favorites. Though I don’t put alternative rock as my favorite genre, or even top three favorite, I really like the style of this band, which balances hard and softer stuff nicely, and these tracks are inciteful, rarely feel repetitive, and overall kept me much entertained. Highly recommended.
